Mass General Brigham (MGB) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). MGB is an integrated academic healthcare system which includes its two founding academic medical centers, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), three nationally renowned specialty hospitals, McLean (Psychiatry), Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and network, and Mass Eye and Ear (all Harvard teaching hospitals), community hospitals throughout Massachusetts and one in New Hampshire, multiple ambulatory sites, urgent care facilities, physician groups, an insurance company, home-based care, and long-term care services. The system is recognized today as one of the world’s most renowned health systems. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is recognized as a national leader in outstanding clinical care, education, and research in rehabilitation medicine. The department comprises 88 PM&R physicians, 19 PhD research faculty, and 12 clinical and administrative staff, operating across more than 50 inpatient and outpatient locations, with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital serving as the primary hub for clinical operations. Research is a cornerstone of the PM&R department, supported by over $35 million in funding in FY24. The Chair will shape the department’s strategic vision and operational direction, promoting excellence in clinical care, research, and education. Key responsibilities include fostering collaboration within the department and with MGB and Harvard Medical School (HMS) to ensure exceptional patient care and effective training programs. The Chair will oversee all PM&R academic programs, faculty recruitment, and development across HMS affiliates while collaborating with the Dean of HMS. The Chair will also develop a strategic plan, provide fiscal oversight for clinical activities and research, and ensure operational efficiency and financial stability in the department.
As a national leader in physical medicine and rehabilitation, the ideal candidate will be an inspirational role model for trainees and faculty, exemplifying excellence in patient care and academic achievement. This position reports directly to MGB’s President of Academic Medical Centers and is based in Boston, Massachusetts; relocation is required for this leadership role. MGB seeks an accomplished physician and leader who brings prior administrative and management experience and proven leadership skills. The successful candidate will have distinguished academic credentials, including an MD or DO degree, and experience in research, training, and clinical achievement, commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Full Professor (preferable) or Associate Professor at HMS. It is preferred that this individual be an actively practicing clinician.
