The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center invites applications for a position as an Assistant or Associate Professor in research ethics to meet growing needs within its Research Foundation. Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center's mission is to become the leader in improving child health. It has active ongoing research in many areas, including genetics and genomics, and is making investments in additional areas including Mind, Brain, and Behavior, biomedical informatics, and organoid development. This faculty member will be expected to engage in collaborative and independent research, teaching, and service in research ethics. The faculty member's research is expected to be internally and extramurally funded. The faculty member's academic appointment will be in a relevant Department or Division with salary support and time commitment to the Ethics Center.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Research and Scholarly Activity: Faculty will be expected to conduct independent and collaborative, extramurally funded research, or have a clearly articulated plan for the development of such funding and make consistent progress in achieving this goal. Faculty will focus on one or more of the following areas in their research: pediatric mental health, organoids, cellular therapies, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, and/or developmental origins of disease. Faculty will be expected to contribute their expertise in ethical, regulatory, and/or social implications of research to institutional research efforts. Publish peer reviewed articles, invited articles, review articles, book chapters, and/or book reviews. Present work at local, national and international meetings. Participate in peer review and abstract review. Scholarly activities are expected to be collaborative and include engagement with institutional priorities. The Ethics Center participates in National Institutes of Health-funded research consortium and networks such as the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network and HEALthy Brain and Childhood Development (HBCD) studies, as well as institutionally-supported research efforts such as the Center for Artificial Intelligence Imaging Research, Center for Pediatric Genomics, Discover Together Biobank, the Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee, and research participant and community research advisory committees.

Teaching and Training: Teach individuals at a variety of levels of training and with diverse backgrounds in different formats. Levels of training may include undergraduate students, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff. Backgrounds may include scientists, clinicians, and clinical research coordinators. Teaching venues may include small group discussion, lectures, and workshops. For example, the Ethics Center collaborates in providing responsible conduct of research education to graduate students and fellows. Contributions may include: recognition as an excellent teacher, role model and mentor; and participate in the development or direction of educational program, curricular offerings and teaching materials. Participate in all divisional/departmental educational activities. Faculty members with an academic appointment in the University are expected to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of their department.

Service and/or Administration: Participate in service and/or administration including but not limited to the Institutional Review Board and serving as a research ethicist or consultant for various institutional research initiatives. Actively participate in Ethics Center activities. Develop participation and eventually leadership in appropriate regional and national organizations. Maintain currency in all departmental policies, procedures and standards. Promote interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships and encourage team concepts.

Patient Care: Patient care is not a requirement of this position. Providers performing patient care are expected to provide safe, effective and compassionate patient care commensurate with the level of advancement and clinical specialty. Document patient care on appropriate records. Examine patients and coordinate services for their care. Perform procedures, collect data, analyze data and make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, reassessment and discontinuation of care. Formulate, maintain, support, monitor and modify a patient-specific plan for care, treatment and rehabilitation based on the patient's assessment. Plan and coordinate care, treatment and rehabilitation for discharged patients. Monitor appropriateness of therapeutic management and care to assure that it occurs in a timely fashion. Promote patient care outcomes on an ongoing basis.

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS: Demonstrated ability to design and conduct research and publish peer-reviewed scholarship either independently and in collaboration with other researchers. Track record of or potential to secure extramural funding. Demonstrated ability and interest to teach individuals at different levels of training and of diverse educational and professional backgrounds. Ability to work constructively with individuals of diverse backgrounds, and ability or potential to lead teams. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Organizational ability sufficient to work within a complex academic medical center. Physicians and nurses are expected to demonstrate excellence in patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Ph.D, M.D., or J.D. or equivalent degree
Assistant or Associate Professor Appointment or eligibility required
Physicians providing patient care must also possess the following:
Current active medical license issued by the State of Ohio or eligible for license
Appropriate medical credentialing/privileges through Medical Staff Services
Prior clinical practice experience may be required based on the specific needs of the hiring department
Nurses providing patient care must also possess a current active nursing license issued by the State of Ohio or be eligible for license.

Preferred:
Candidates with doctoral training in the social sciences or humanities and postdoctoral training in bioethics are encouraged to apply
Knowledge of research ethics and experience conducting empirical or normative research. Expertise in ethical issues in research in mental health, neurosciences, organoids, cellular therapies, or developmental origins of disease, and/or research using bioinformatics or artificial intelligence.
Record of extramural funding. Candidates who do not have a record of extramural funding are expected to have a concrete plan for securing such funding.
Record of scholarly productivity
Prior experience in a multidisciplinary ethics center in an academic medical center.
Prior experience in pediatrics
Board certification for physicians providing patient care
