The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) in Albuquerque and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, University of New Mexico School of Medicine (UNSOM), are seeking an Orthopedic Surgeon experienced in adult and general orthopedic surgery to join an existing Orthopedic section. Sub-speciality interest is encouraged but not required. Proven leadership and management expertise is desirable. The NMVAHCS serves as the tertiary referral hospital for all veterans in New Mexico and West Texas facilities. The NMVAHCS enjoys an affiliation with the University of New Mexico. The NMVAHCS is a 217 bed medical, surgical, psychiatric and research and academic facility with a Spinal Cord Injury Center and Geriatric and Extended Care Unit. Integrated outpatient and inpatient services are provided, featuring a full range of primary care, tertiary care and referral services. Duties include surgical and non-surgical treatment of acute and chronic orthopedic disorders, and orthopedic resident supervision. The opportunity for research is available. A full range of orthopedic services are offered. Patient care, research and teaching opportunities are available. This position has the possibility of obtaining a faculty appointment (or will have) a faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico, Department of orthopedics. Duties include, but are not limited to: Perform evaluation and management services including: Complete history and physical examinations. Interim evaluations. Ordering of diagnostic studies. Patient consultations. Admission to and discharge from acute care and critical care units. Supervise, instruct and assist specialty residents, students, and ancillary health personnel in their evaluation and management of patients. Perform non-operating room procedures, and minimal invasive operative procedures which may include but are not limited: Incision and drainage, mass excisions, IV's, aspiration and/or injection of musculoskeletal structure. Reduction of fractures and dislocations, application of casts and splints, and such other orthopedic procedures as can be safely accomplished without involvement of anesthesia or operating room environment.
