The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 to GS-07. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments. This position is a full-time temporary position not to exceed 13 months. Temporary appointments may be extended at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations.
The Staff Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) functions as a member of a multidisciplinary and interagency team.
These position(s) are considered to be under the umbrella of the Physical Therapy Section of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service (PM&RS), VA San Diego Healthcare System. The PTA provides treatment that promotes the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical and psychosocial dysfunction.
Assignments include: Serves as an active team member in a comprehensive inpatient/outpatient rehabilitation program such as geriatrics, amputee, traumatic brain injury, cardiac rehabilitation, neurological rehab, aquatics, orthopedics, or wound care, etc. Provides patient education to patients and their caregivers.
The PTA administers and monitors therapeutic interventions based on goals formulated by a Physical Therapist, but must be able to carry out a general treatment plans independently, without direct involvement of a Physical Therapist and the duties and responsibilities of the position are carried out including various clinical, administrative and patient care areas associated with PM&RS, including the following:
1. Receives and interprets requests or instructions for procedures from the physical therapist or physician.
2. Assists in the performance of, and independently performs, highly specialized and diversified treatment procedures.
3. Various procedures or positions to adjust for Veterans' medical conditions
4. Prepares and presents written and oral reports for the ward physician, nursing staff, fellow therapists and all other professionals concerned with the patient's care.
Additionally, the incumbent functions collaboratively with DoD health care professionals to enhance coordination and access to services in support of the Joint Incentive Fund (JIF) project between VA and DoD. Based on the incumbent's training and experience it is possible to be assigned other duties aligned with the mission of the VA Healthcare System.
Work Schedule: The position is full-time, 40 hours per week, but weekend/extended hours/holiday work will be required, as needed, to meet the needs of the Service and patient care.
